Who doesn’t love a list?
Every year, twice a year, I teach a class on color and design. In the preparations for the class I compile a list of books that I have found to be integral in my pursuit of color knowledge. It is a very long list (12 pages) so I decided to pick eight books that I think are important for those who are looking to grow their knowledge and understanding of color.
1). A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman
2). Color and Human Response by Faber Birren
3). Color Psychology & Color Therapy by Faber Birren
4). Color Graphics; The Power of Color in Graphic Design by Karen Triedman and Cheryl Dangel Cullen
5). Colour/Travels Through the Paintbox by Victoria Finlay
6). A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield
7). Living With Color by Deryck Healy
8). Designing Across Cultures-How to Create Effective Graphics for Diverse Ethnic Groups by Ronnie Lipton
I would love to hear about your favorite color books. Are any of these books on your “must read” list?
What books would you include in your top ten list of color books?

Hello! Such an interesting list! I would include Goethe’s book on color and light as well as Diane Vreeland’s books and her recent autobiography on video: The eye likes to wander…. Great woman and her style was impeccable. Her background and European upbringing in the 20s make her very special. After all, she is the one who really brought color into the forefront in the USA, and her apartment in New York was painted and decorated in the most amazing red. I noticed that one of my private messages to Bobbie somehow got published on the 1/22/12 blog? I am sure it is a mishap and I would like to ask you to take my comment off the blog as it is personal and was not meant for the general public. Please let me know once it is done. Thank you. Lately, I have noticed that the script is in very light colors, this time a light gray. While I think it is a nice idea, at least on my computer, it is almost impossible to read. I had mentioned this last year when there was a post in the lightest turquoise and again, impossible to read. I hope to see you and Bobbie in Los Angeles in January! Best regards, Britta

Britta, you have suggested books that are wonderful! I love Diana Vreeland! Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Thanks for sharing, Leatrice! I love a great list, too. I read Travels Through the Paintbox and found it very interesting. I also really enjoyed Janice Linday’s book, All About Colour. I’m adding the two books by Faber Birren to my list.
Sounds like your library resembles mine. Thank you for sharing, Carol.
