I have been fortunate to participate in many industry and university events, trade shows, and podcasts. Many have been memorable, but the very latest was truly outstanding. I was invited to speak at Paul Mitchell’s “Desert Bloom” conference on the Colortime© system as applied to the art of hair coloring.
The event, which brought together salon owners and beauty professionals from around the world, was held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas—a most colorful venue where the gorgeous fountains take center stage at appointed times during the day and evening. An array of 2000 pieces of Chihuly glass in equally fabulous colors hangs from the ceiling in the lobby, and the seasonal displays bring even more color into the atmosphere.
The previous owner of the Bellagio was an art aficionado, and the ballrooms and meeting rooms are named after artists, such as Van Gogh, Raphael, and Michelangelo. The three-tiered ballroom in which I was appointed to speak was named after Monet. This turned out to be prophetic, since I was sharing our Colortime theory, and Monet’s work with light and color strongly influenced our concept of hues divided into Sunrise, Sunlight, and Sunset colors.
The audience was largely made up of hairstylists and colorists. I can’t remember the last presentation I did with a mannequin head at each spot! I showed the attendees images of models and celebrities in their best hair colors so that they could visualize the information and share it with their clientele. Then we divided into groups of two so that each attendee could analyze their partner’s Colortimes. They were provided with Paul Mitchell hair samples that they divided into the three Colortimes. We also provided inserts from my book, More Alive With Color, including the Pantone designation colors for the colors included in each Colortime.
And then we did a “show and tell” with each stylist explaining why they chose a specific Colortime. It was a great learning experience, not to mention fun as well!
And, speaking of fun, after the daytime work sessions, there were various opportunities to mingle and meet, culminating with a grand gala on the final night. It was time to bring out the bling and even more color with Cirque de Soleil performers dangling from the ceiling.
I was honored to sit at the same table with John Paul’s family, close friends, and staff, so I had the opportunity to talk to this amazing icon in the beauty business. The success of this company came from hard work, talent, perseverance, and dedication. Of note, and certainly important, was that Paul Mitchell was the first company in the industry to publicly oppose animal testing, in 1989. It’s a great story and I urge you to read about it!
